Ergodicity of the Nosé-Hoover method

چکیده
Ergodicity of the systems with Nosé-Hoover thermostat are studied. The dynamics of the heatbath variables are investigated and they can be periodic when the system has quick oscillation. The periodic behaviour of them causes the system to lose its ergodicity. The kinetic-moments method is also studied, and the heatbath variables in this method are found to be chaotic. The chaotic behaviour makes the whole system ergodic.

Non-ergodicity of Nosé-Hoover dynamics
The Nosé-Hoover dynamics is a deterministic method that is commonly used to sample the canonical Gibbs measure. This dynamics extends the physical Hamiltonian dynamics by the addition of a “thermostat” variable, that is coupled nonlinearly with the physical variables. The accuracy of the method depends on the dynamics being ergodic. Numerical experiments have been published earlier that are con...
متن کاملNon-Ergodicity of the Nosé–Hoover Thermostatted Harmonic Oscillator
The Nosé–Hoover thermostat is a deterministic dynamical system designed for computing phase space integrals for the canonical Gibbs distribution. Newton’s equations are modified by coupling an additional reservoir variable to the physical variables. The correct sampling of the phase space according to the Gibbs measure is dependent on the Nosé–Hoover dynamics being ergodic. Hoover presented num...
متن کاملNon-Ergodicity of Nosé-Hoover Chain Dynamics
Ergodicity of the dynamics is a prerequisite for obtaining ensemble averaged results from a single time trajectory, making it a key requirement for calculating statistical mechanical properties through molecular dynamics simulations. Nosé-Hoover chain (NHC) thermostat is a popular way of constraining temperature in molecular dynamics simulations. Previously, it was thought that NHC imparts ergo...
متن کاملA Metropolis Adjusted Nosé-hoover Thermostat
We present a Monte Carlo technique for sampling from the canonical distribution in molecular dynamics. The method is built upon the Nosé-Hoover constant temperature formulation and the generalized hybrid Monte Carlo method. In contrast to standard hybrid Monte Carlo methods only the thermostat degree of freedom is stochastically resampled during a Monte Carlo step. Mathematics Subject Classific...
متن کاملNosé-Hoover sampling of quantum entangled distribution functions
While thermostated time evolutions stand on firm grounds and are widely used in classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations [1], similar methods for quantum MD schemes are still lacking. In the special case of a quantum particle in a harmonic potential, it has been shown that the framework of coherent states permits to set up equations of motion for an isothermal quantum dynamics [2]. In the ...
